General Summary: Support attorney(s) and/or patent scientists in the preparation and prosecution of legal documents. Maintain files, dockets and calendars, ensuring that all appointments and due dates are met. Responsible for input of billable hours. Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Assist in preparation and prosecution of legal documents.
1.1. Compose, draft and revise documents, forms and postcards as required.
1.2. Word processing, transcribe letters and short documents, complete macro letters, and revisions.

1.4. Schedule couriers, notarial services, and other special functions as needed.

3.1. Ensure that billable hours are input correctly into the Carpe Diem system in a timely manner.

4. Provide typical support functions.
4.1. Ensure that files are generated, opened and maintained.
4.2. File and maintain documents in physical files and iManage system.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The Design Patent Assistant helps attorneys and the Design Supervisor with all aspects of domestic and foreign patent prosecution.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assist in the preparation of formal drawings or digital photo processing, assist with the filing and prosecution of US and foreign design patent applications prepared by attorney. Includes but not limited to declarations and powers of attorney forms, executed assignment documents, information disclosure statements, priority documents.
• Review PTO documents and prepare and file requests for correction of official filing receipts, requests for corrected assignment recordation cover sheets, requests for certificates of correction.
• Prepare and forward client reporting letters for new application filings, recorded assignments, official filing receipts, review and update status charts with incoming docketable due dates including final and non-final office actions, restriction/species requirements, notices to file missing parts, notices of allowance, issue notifications, issued patents, proofreading patents, certificates of correction, and notices of abandonment.
• Maintain prior art collections and perform prior art searches for citation in IDS’s.
• Complete assigned work in a careful, expeditious and profession manner.
• Be aware of specific client requirements and needs for filing and reporting of documents.
• Maintain file integrity.
Skills and Educational Requirements: Attention to detail a must. Good organization skills. Knowledge of MS Word 2003 and Excel 2003. Excellent grammar and proofreading skills. Basic knowledge of patent prosecution helpful. In lieu of experience, ability to quickly learn and utilize new skills is required.

The successful candidate will be responsible for performing factual, legal, and medical review and analysis for assigned cases; evaluating documentary evidence, including medical records, and preparing draft agency decisions and other case-related correspondence; communicating directly with claimants and counsel regarding statutory criteria, making eligibility recommendations for each assigned claim; and performing other duties as assigned. Some travel to affected communities in the Southwestern United States. A two-year commitment is required.
