Robert E. Ward and Associates, P.C. provides tax, business and estate planning services to individuals and business entities. We are a fast-growing Bethesda law firm looking for the right candidate to join our young, energetic team of legal assistants and paralegals.

Legal Assistant: In addition to daily administrative tasks, the Legal Assistant's primary duties are production of legal documents. Other duties include assistance with court filings, file maintenance, and assisting clients.

Requirements: College degree, excellent organizational skills, developed writing and proof-reading skills, exceptional communications skills, and computer proficiency. Proficiency in WordPerfect or Microsoft Word is a must. The ideal candidate has a strong work ethic and some administrative experience in an office environment. Recent college graduates are encouraged to apply.

Compensation: $30,000 - $35,000/yr; DOE/negotiable; and competitive benefits plan.

Intellectual property paralegal to support of patents/technology transfer activities of the Legal Department. This individual will have knowledge of patent filing and prosecution practice, an understanding of patent documents and intellectual property agreements, and experience in docketing of patent activities and relational database management.

Paralegals at M&S are front-line participants in the firm’s creative litigation practice and work closely with attorneys, clients, witnesses and the firm’s many allies in the civil rights and social justice communities. M&S represents plaintiffs – primarily employees, consumers, investors and small businesses – in class action cases that challenge a variety of corporate abuses on behalf of hundreds or thousands of potential class members. Paralegals at M&S field intake calls from potential clients, conduct witness interviews and draft affidavits for the firm’s active cases. Paralegals also prepare graphs, charts and other explanatory materials and assist in online and documentary research for cases in various stages of investigation or litigation.

• managing case files;
• editing and formatting documents and court filings;
• helping attorneys with document review and deposition preparation;
• offering general office support, as needed; and

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to the following:

Compile, edit, analyze, and assist in the preparation of reports and studies, following general litigation guidelines.

Draft basic legal correspondence.

Collect, organize and verify evidence for cases.

Maintain contact with outside legal counsel.

Conduct searches at Copyright Office for copyright registration information.

Coordinate factual investigations with anti-piracy personnel.

Take and prepare summary memos of documentation evidence for use by attorneys in the conduct of management of claims and litigation. Such duties include taking notes on depositions and preparing deposition summaries and master reference files.

Maintain legal files (pleadings, correspondence, research and evidence) for active and inactive cases.

Maintain and track settlements.

Assist attorneys with administrative responsibilities.

Assist attorneys in gathering discovery materials.

* At all times, a paralegal’s work should be done under the supervision and direction of lawyers.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university and at least one to three years related experience.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge of basic methods of legal research
Knowledge of various kinds of documentary evidence
Skills in writing and summarizing
