Legal Secretary (Communications/Public Policy)

Dickstein Shapiro LLP, a large, reputable, DC-based law firm has an exciting opportunity for a legal secretary/assistant. This multi-faceted position supports a Partner and an Associate working on Broadcast Communications matters. These attorneys represent clients in the broadcast, common carrier, and wireless telecommunications industries with regulatory, licensing, transactional, and litigation matters. In addition, this position also supports a Partner in the Public Policy who focuses his practice on counseling clients in government decision making, and providing creative solutions to traditional Washington problems.

The ideal applicant has at least 2 years of legal secretarial experience, preferably in either a law firm or Capitol Hill environment; a clear and professional phone demeanor; meticulous attention to detail; the ability to maintain high standards consistently in an extremely busy environment; an interest in political Washington and the desire to stay on top of political trends; and a desire to take responsibility and work as part of a coordinated team. Strong skills in transcription, advanced MS Word, and Outlook are a must.

Duties include transcribing tapes; tracking pertinent political information via internet research; converting, proofing and editing documents; working in a database; tracking and maintaining client billing; organization and scheduling of calendar events; providing customer service to clients and colleagues via phone and email; organizing and maintaining files; and continuing to maintain contact and fulfill these duties proactively while attorneys are off-site.

Banner & Witcoff, an intellectual property firm, is seeking a support secretary for its Washington, DC office. Please review the duties and needs below and forward a resume and cover letter with salary requirements.

This position provides secretarial support to the legal and administrative staff when the regularly assigned secretary is absent or the secretary is in need of overflow assistance.

Duties and Responsibilities: Assists legal staff with documents for filing in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Assists with and/or composes reporting correspondence, answers the phones, and files PTO and other correspondence in the respective files. Assists other firm departments, as needed, with secretarial help. Assists attorneys/law clerks/technical assistants, as assigned, when regularly assigned secretary is out. Performs all duties of regularly assigned secretary in their absence. Acts as back-up receptionist.

Skills and Educational Requirements: High school diploma or GED is required. Should be familiar with the various letter-writing formats and have good grammar, punctuation and proofreading skills. Should have at least two years experience as an administrative secretary/assistant. Must be familiar with business telephone etiquette. Knowledge of the functions of computer is needed; knowledge of transcription machines a plus.

Necessary Attributes: Must be able to work in a fast paced environment and be able to adapt to doing multiple tasks on a daily basis; able to meet daily and month end deadlines; must also have good communication skills. Also, must be adaptable to changing schedules.

Patent Prosecution Specialist (Paralegal)

Banner & Witcoff, Ltd., an intellectual property firm, is seeking a Patent Prosecution Specialist to join its Washington-based General Prosecution Department.

Duties include:
• Prepare and file in the US Patent and Trademark Office US patent utility and design applications prepared by client, declarations and powers of attorney forms, executed assignment documents, information disclosure statements, priority documents, English language translations of non-English specifications, responses to notices to file missing parts, responses to restriction/species requirements. Review PTO documents and prepare and file requests for correction of official filing receipts, requests for corrected assignment recordation cover sheets, requests for certificate of correction.
• Prepare and forward client reporting letters for attorney signature for new application filings, recorded assignments, official filing receipts, final and non-final office actions, restriction/species requirements, notices to file missing parts, notices of allowance, issue notifications, issued patents, proofreading patents, certificates of correction, and notices of abandonment.
• Review files, complete appropriate checklists, and prepare and file status inquires or requests for documents based on file review.
• Proof for accuracy the title page, abstract, claims, and specification (as needed) of issued patents. Proof all client reporting letters and documents for filing in the Patent Office prior to forwarding to department supervisor.
• Review Certificate of Correction when received from the Patent Office and forward to client.
• Prepare and distribute morning delivery of GPD files for attorney review and signature and then pick-up of completed work from GPD drop points.
• Maintain written record of output from the department, including proper file transfer in TMC.
• Complete assigned work in an expeditious and professional manner.
• Be aware of client requirements and needs for filing and reporting of documents. Maintain file integrity.

Skills and Educational Requirements:
High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred. Attention to detail a must. Good organization skills. Basic knowledge of MS Word for use with generating form letters and documents. Excellent grammar and proofreading skills. Basic knowledge of patent prosecution helpful. In lieu of experience, ability to quickly learn and utilize new skills is required.

Litigation Paralegal

The Law Offices of Randell C. Ogg and the law firm of Litigation Associates, PLLC seek a paralegal to assist two attorneys in litigation matters. The attorneys represent clients in commercial, personal injury, and civil litigation in federal and state courts. The job responsibilities include telephone calls, copying, mailing, and filing court papers, preparing deposition and trial exhibits, scheduling matters, paying invoices, as well as interviewing prospective clients and witnesses, drafting letters and discovery requests, conducting factual investigation and legal research, and other litigation-related functions. Prior law firm experience is highly desirable.

The annual salary is $40,000 plus benefits in the form of monthly cash disbursements of $400. Overtime pay will be provided at 150% of regular salary. Full-time applicants only.

A new and growing, two-partner law firm in Beltsville, Maryland, seeks a capable Administrative Assistant/Office Manager to provide organizational support as its clientele increases. Our areas of practice include: bankruptcy, family law, wills and trusts, business law, civil litigation, criminal defense, workers’ compensation, and personal injury.

Wage: Hourly and negotiable depending on experience, skills, and qualifications, but we anticipate paying between $14-$16 per hour, with gradual increases in pay over time and bonuses for exceptional work.
